A NEW bus service for an East Cleveland hospital has been greeted with delight.
The hourly service which will serve the hospital at Brotton from a number of surrounding villages, starts on September 3. A council leader says this will have a major spin-off for the community in general.
The Boroughbus 751, funded by Redcar and Cleveland council and the Tees and North East Yorkshire NHS trust, will run hourly on weekdays between 8am and 5pm from Easington to the hospital via Loftus, Westfield Estate, Skinningrove, Carlin How and Brotton.
Council leader David Walsh said: "This new service shows how public bodies like the NHS and councils can work together for the mutual benefit of the public they serve. Setting up services like this reduces the need for extra car trips and helps those who have no access to a car.
The bus will upgrade the present service for villages around the hospital to bring a regular, all-day hourly run.
It received a warm welcome from Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland MP, Dr Ashok Kumar, who said it would be a godsend to many elderly patients at present forced to use taxis or face a long walk from Brotton High Street.
Details of the service are on the Travelline on 0870 608 2608.
