ANGRY HARTLEPOOL United boss Chris Turner is ready to get ruthless.

After seeing his side fall to a 2-1 defeat at home to arch-rivals Darlington at Victoria Park, Turner takes his side to Leyton Orient this afternoon determined there will be no derby hangover.

Pool gave a disappointing display against their arch-rivals, seeing a one-goal lead slip away as Quakers took control.

And with a swift chance to put the defeat behind them this afternoon, Turner looks set to ring the changes.

Darrell Clarke, James Sharp and Anthony Williams are likely to be given their first starts of the season, while Mark Robinson was part of the Pool party that travelled to London yesterday morning for the first of three successive games away from Victoria Park.

Clarke impressed as a second half substitute, while Williams' gruelling work-out with goalkeeping coach Mark Prudhoe after the game indicated a recall isn't too far away.

"I didn't think we had any good performances out there,'' fumed Turner. "I felt that for most of the game we were second best all over the field. To Darlington's credit they played all the football.

"We got into a winning position and Andy Collett made a great point-blank save when we were one-up and then they took the game to us.

"We have been on top against Darlington in the last two seasons - this time we had the opportunity again and failed. We have had a lot of good days here, but this was a bad day.

"I'm sorry and disappointed for the fans , but we will pick up and there will be a lot more good days to come.''

Pool head for Orient with a point to prove after slumping 3-1 on Easter Monday last season as both sides homed in on the promotion places.

Pool had little fluency on Saturday and have yet to find the form and direction that steered them into the play-offs in the last two seasons.

So the Pool chief is looking for a quick response to Saturday's failings.

"We were outfought against Darlington, we didn't win enough second ball,'' he reflected. "Too many players were not on top of their game.

"Maybe they thought the game was won at 1-0 and now it is time to get some backsides kicked.

"This wasn't what I expected and wasn't what we expect from a Hartlepool team - maybe some of them think they are better players than they are.

"Some of the players think they are automatically in the team - but they are in for a shock.

"There's some patient players here who haven't played for three games this season and haven't had a chance. I want a team of winners here as we have in the past.

"There will be no quick reaction, but we will sit down and look at things before the game and give some players a chance.

"Darrell Clarke came on and did well, but there won't be any clues before we fill in the team sheet at two o'clock.''

Mark Tinkler headed Pool in front, but his joy was short-lived as Brian Atkinson and Danny Mellanby turned the scoreline in Quakers' favour.

"All the lads are down in the dressing room,'' admitted Tinkler. "But we have got a chance to put it right on Monday. They passed the ball around for five or ten minutes and then we got the goal. But it didn't settle us down and we have got to put this behind us as soon as possible.

"We had a couple of good chances to draw level, but Andy Collett made some good saves. The gaffer brought big Tony on but we just couldn't break them down. Like I said everyone is disappointed to lose to Darlington, but we have got the players to go to Orient and get a result.''
