TAXI drivers who use their own cars to carry fares say they will not benefit from a new MoT system.
As reported in The Northern Echo earlier this month, Darlington Borough Council has obtained a certificate meaning that private hire and Hackney Carriage taxis licensed by the authority do not need a separate MoT certificate.
The council said this would save drivers money because they would not have to pay for MoT tests.
But drivers say they have been told if they use their cars for private journeys as well as to collect fares they can not benefit from the council compliance certificate.
Michael Kennedy, of the Darlington Independent Taxi Drivers' Association, said: "We have found out that the only way this new certificate can be issued is if you use your car to pick up fares and nothing else. I own my car, not the council, so I don't see how they can dictate what I use it for.
"I should be able to take my family shopping in my car if I want. If I go to buy new tyres that is classed as private use - it is just ridiculous.
"If you get this new certificate and then have an accident when using the car privately you wouldn't have a valid MoT. What do they expect us to do? Have a car for private use and the cab?"
No-one at Darlington council was available for comment, but previously a spokesman had praised the benefits of obtaining the the compliance certificate, saying: "There are significant benefits to the taxi trade in the council obtaining the certificate of exemption."
