A TOWN centre will be brought to a standstill as bus drivers take a break from driving to pull one of their vehicles through the street.

Drivers from Garnett Coaches, in Bishop Auckland, will be joined by rugby players from the town and by boxers from Shildon, as they try to raise money to make a three-year-old cancer sufferer's dream come true.

The sponsored event, which will take place in Newgate Street on Friday, has been organised by Joyce Dowson, from South Church, who was touched by the plight of Megan Lockey, from Walkworth Avenue, Bishop Auckland.

She said: "All that little girl wants to do is go to Disney World to see the Princess's palace.''

Mrs Lockey, 70, whose husband recently died of cancer, is hoping to raise £4,000 to send Megan on her dream holiday with her parents and younger brother.

She has been delighted with the response she has received so far, especially from the coach company, which is giving up its 59-seater bus for the afternoon, plus all of its drivers.

She said: "They are working really hard and the police have also been marvellous.''

Carole Garnett, from the coach company, said: "It was for a good cause and we just decided to support it."
