MAGISTRATES have called for a psychiatric assessment of a stalker who pestered and made advances to women at a town centre library.
Bernard Costello, 59, of Greenbank Road, Darlington, admitted last month three charges of harassment relating to his behaviour.
Costello had loitered around the library in Crown Street approaching both staff and members of the public and then following them about town.
His advances towards females were said to have left them "anxious and distressed".
The defendant had been due to be dealt with today at Darlington Magistrates Court with his case having previously been adjourned for pre-sentence reports.
However, magistrates decided they wanted new psychiatric reports on him to be prepared.
The case was adjourned until September 27. Costello had his bail renewed with conditions not to enter Darlington town centre except by arranged appointment to visit his solicitor or the Benefits Agency.
