A life-size model of a Spitfire aircraft has flown into Hartlepool Art Gallery to mark the start of an exhibition by three artists who were born in the town.
The model, crafted from paper, steel and resins, is suspended above the main hall of the gallery. It is the work of Anthony Heywood.
The Spitfire is one of a range of sculptures and paintings by Mr Heywood, Basil Beattie and Paul Wager which are on show at the gallery until September 26.
Mr Heywood said yesterday: "The concept of the Spitfire sculpture is based on a dove of peace.
"The spitfire, one of the most dominant icons of the 20th century, is an object recognised by all generations of people.
"It is a machine which fought fascism and therefore represents freedom to millions of people throughout the world."
Kevin Burns, Hartlepool Borough Council's marketing officer, said: "We are absolutely delighted to host an exhibition of work of these three Hartlepool-born artists, who have earned such critical acclaim both at home and abroad.
"Using a variety of different mediums, their work is both striking and memorable, with each one driven by a very unique vision.
"We are particularly grateful to Northern Arts for helping to support the exhibition by meeting some of the transportation costs of the Spitfire sculpture."
The exhibition is free and the gallery is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 5.30pm, and on Sundays, from 2pm to 5pm.
