MARKS and Spencer's stores in the region have been chosen for makeovers as part of an £80m modernisation programme.
Branches at the Gateshead MetroCentre, Newcastle, Middlesbrough and Harrogate will be given a more modern image as well as extra facilities such as bakeries. They will receive new lighting, new walkways, refurbished fitting rooms, new fixtures and new signs, and specialist staff will be taken on to sell new ranges.
The 90 chosen stores will launch the Per Una collection, designed by George Davies, and newly created Beauty Shops will promote products including John Gustafson's Perfect cosmetic range.
Beauty consultants will offer advice on the best make-up for different skin types and the latest looks for the season, as well as giving makeovers on request.
David Campbell, the Middlesbrough regional store manager, said: "Middlesbrough's customers deserve the best on the high street, so we are delighted that their store will be among the first to benefit from this new wave of investment.
"Staff at the store are very excited by the news."
