THE costs to the taxpayer of the ill-fated Love Parade came to light as the inquest into its failure rumbled on yesterday.
Leading officials at Newcastle City Council were called before a committee to explain just how and why the Radio One dance festival was called off at the 11th hour.
The parade was expected to bring in hundreds of thousands of revellers to Newcastle earlier this summer, but was abandoned because of public health concerns.
Costs to the taxpayer was revealed as £92,000 yesterday, although some estimates of the overall cost have been as high as £500,000.
Called before the committee yesterday were head of arts and culture Paul Rubenstein, and the man ultimately responsible for ensuring public safety, Stephen Savage.
The Local Government Ombudsman, Pat Thomas, is also investigating the cancellation.
