PLANS for the North-East's first Olympic-size swimming pool have moved a step towards reality.

An outline planning application has been submitted to build the 50-metre, eight-lane pool next to Sunderland AFC's Stadium of Light.

A consortium led by the Premiership club has been chosen as the preferred developer by regional development agency One NorthEast.

The consortium plans to build the pool, along with a sports arena, leisure centre and education and technology centre on the ten-acre site next to the stadium, which was built on the former Wearmouth Colliery.

If the planning application is granted by Sunderland City Council, the consortium hopes to win funding from the Sports Lottery Fund.

There are no Olympic facilities in the region - the nearest being in Edinburgh and Leeds - although Newcastle City Council is working on proposals.

Sunderland City Council chief executive Colin Sinclair said: "It's vital we grasp the opportunity to bring such an important sporting facility to the region.

"There is massive demand for these types of facilities, both as centres of excellence and as facilities for the general public to enjoy.

"I can think of no better location in the region - central and with great access by private or public transport."

Sunderland AFC chairman Bob Murray said: "This is a magnificent site next to the country's finest modern football stadium, and it's essential that any development on Stadium Park should reflect the quality and landmark importance of the stadium."

The council, which will decide the planning application, says it will begin "wide-ranging consultation" on the proposals.

If it gives permission, a detailed planning application will be drawn up.
