Talks between directors and union negotiators, which for the first time included shop stewards, at Newcastle Airport lasted most of yesterday.
If the first of a series of strikes goes ahead as planned tomorrow, September 8 up to 25 flights on eight airlines could be affected.
Newcastle Airport expect about 10,000 passengers to pass through the airport to board or alight 70 flights on the day. Contingency plans have been laid down and the airport has advised tourists to contact their travel agents or airline direct.
Government agency Acas brokered the talks yesterday and will chair the further discussions.
About 150 baggage handlers and other floor staff members of the Transport and General Workers Union have rejected two pay offers, the second at about four-and-a-half per cent, from their employers Groundstar.
