St James the Great Church, in Albert Hill, Darlington, became 125 years old yesterday.
A series of events have been held throughout the year to celebrate the 125th anniversary of its dedication.
Last night, a Mass of thanksgiving was led by The Right Reverend John Broadhurst, Bishop of Fulham.
Prayer books marking the anniversary were presented to the congregation.
A parish reception followed in the church hall, attended by the Mayor of Darlington, Councillor Isobel Hartley.
St James the Great Church was consecrated on August 31, 1876, by the then Bishop of Durham, the Right Reverend Charles Baring.
Bishop Baring, a member of the Baring banking family, used his wealth in Victorian times to establish several churches.
St James The Great Church, however, was funded under the patronage of the Crown and Queen Victoria.
The church'spresent parish priest is Father Ian Grieves, who has been working at the church for 12 years.
He has overseen a number of improvements to the church, including restoration work on the high altar and church organ, and the renovation of two stained glass windows.
The church's congregation has also expanded during his time in charge and now stands at more than 100, with parishioners travelling from all over the region to attend services.
Members of the church have been asked to donate items, including prayer books, photographs and other mementos, for an exhibition in the church will be on display for the next month.
