AN MP has hit out at plans to remove the name of a town from from one of its schools.
Stockton South MP Dari Taylor claims Thornaby's identity is under threat, particularly after it was revealed a college of further education being built in Teesdale would not have any reference to Thornaby in its title.
Now, it seems that Thornaby Village School will lose the town's name from its title.
Ms Taylor said that the moves would cause outrage and insult.
Last year, train operator Northern Spirit tried to change the name of Thornaby station, but the plans were dropped after an outcry by residents.
Ms Taylor called on Stockton Borough Council and the college to take pride in their association with the town.
She said: "The people of Thornaby are proud of their community, and proud of institutions in their community that promote high standards.
"It is so disappointing to hear these institutions do not appreciate the role they play in the community."
Council leader Bob Gibson said the school was reverting to its original name because it was getting confused with Thornaby Community School and Thornaby Church of England Primary School.
"I do not know of a school that is more committed to Thornaby," he said.
