THE cost of heroin has plummeted so much in North Yorkshire, users are claiming they can buy wraps of the narcotic for less than Class B drugs such as cannabis.
Police in York say their hard line on drugs continues, with dealers and users targeted and more arrests made already this year than last. But dealing goes on, and heroin is reportedly available for £5 for an eighth of an ounce, compared to the £10 or £15 going rate for cannabis.
There are concerns the prices may tempt some to try heroin although the city's Chief Superintendent, Gary Barnett, differs.
"Our research indicates people who use the more recreational drugs such as amphetamine or Ecstasy are not usually the same people as use heroin,'' he said.
