A NATIONAL roadshow aimed at reducing accidents on construction sites is in the region today.
The roadshow will be at Bishop Auckland Hospital, in County Durham, with a hard-hitting campaign which will highlight the number of workers killed on construction sites simply because they cannot be seen. The Working Well Together double-decker bus travelling campaign, organised by the Health and Safety Commission, is supported by 3M Scotch Reflective Material.
Marketing executive Helen Antcliff said: "Many construction accidents would not happen if workers were bright enough and therefore highly visible to drivers of dump trucks, cranes and other vehicles. Being hit by a moving vehicle is the second largest cause of occupational death in the UK.
"High visibility waistcoats hanging on a shovel do not protect workers. Likewise, if covered in muck or grease, torn or damaged, they may no longer do the job. We are delivering a powerful message directly to workers on site - wear your high visibility jacket, it could save your life."
Construction workers are invited to the touring bus, which includes information packs and promotional giveaways to push the message.
