ENGLISH Schools champion Craig Glanville saw his season brought to an abrupt end as he aggravated a hamstring injury representing Gateshead Harriers in the prestigious McDonald's Young Athletes Final at Birmingham.
The 14-year-old Washington schoolboy, holder of the AAA indoor and outdoor 400 metres titles and the region's leading under-15 multi-eventer, was expected to be a major points winner for the Tynesiders.
But Glanville, who went into the meeting at Birmingham's Alexander Stadium hoping to have recovered from a thigh injury picked up at Gateshead's Tartan Games a week earlier, suffered a painful recurrence in his first event, the 80m hurdles.
Glanville still managed to finish second in a personal-best 11.78 secs, but the injury ruled him out of his specialist event, the 400m - which he was expected to win - the 200m and the 400m relay as Gateshead went on to finished last of the eight teams.
Glanville's schoolmate, Lewis Robson, who had surprisingly beaten him in the Northumberland Classic at Hexham six days previously, emerged as a major scorer for Gateshead, winning the 400m B race (53.52 secs), the long jump A (5.72m) and finishing second in the high jump B (1.55m)
Pole vaulter Mark Christie comfortably won the under-17 A event with first time clearances of 4.30m and 4.50m, but a rain shower hindered his attempt at 4.72m to take him to the top of the UK rankings.
Chris Parr was an impressive winner of the under-17 1500m A race (4:09.35) after finishing fourth in the 800m.
Gateshead's only medal winner in under-13 events was William Pike, second in the 800m A race (2:25.30).
