repair works taking five weeks to complete are due to start on Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland, on Sunday.
The south-bound nearside lane will be closed and one of the outward-bound lanes from the city centre will be used for inward-bound traffic.
Andy Morris, senior assistant director of environment at Sunderland City Council, said: "One of the lanes of the bridge will have to be closed while the work goes ahead, but traffic arrangements will be in place to ensure two lanes in and out of the city centre continue.
"We apologise for any inconvenience caused to motorists while this essential maintenance takes place and would advise them to use alternative routes if possible.
