A HOME has been found for an historic ship built in the North-East.
The City of Adelaide was built at the William Pile Hay and Co shipyard in Sunderland in 1864 and is one of only three surviving clippers of its type in the world.
It is now moored in the Scottish Maritime Museum in Irvine, Scotland, but the museum does not have enough funds to restore it.
Campaigners from Sunderland Maritime Heritage want to bring the clipper back to the Wear as a floating museum.
A resting place has now been found at the ex-Austin and Pickersgill yard, but the group would need to raise about £2.5m for new dock gates and a further £7m for restoration.
The campaign received a boost last week when Duke of Edinburgh, who is president of the Maritime Trust, called for a conference to be held in Glasgow later this month to discuss the clipper's future
