THREE teenagers are to brief delegates before they attend an international conference in the US.

The first United Nations general assembly session on children takes place in New York later this week and three members of the Durham Young People's Centre will travel to London on Thursday, to talk to the UK delegates.

The centre, in Claypath, Durham City, offers support and advice services to youngsters and also has a clinic, laundry and coffee bar.

Anne Pearson, 16, Miriam Wakefield, 17, and Rachel Atkinson, also 17, were chosen to speak to ministers and other delegates about the issues that affect them.

They are all members of the centre's youth forum and play an active role in the running of the centre.

The girls will give a 15-minute presentation about health issues affecting young people.

Mandy Taylor, project co-ordinator, said yesterday: "They are the only three people to have been chosen from the North-East, and it is a really good opportunity for them."
