FARMERS' markets across the North-East are staging special promotions and events during September as part of Fall in Love with Local Food month.

North-East co-ordinator Cathie Tinn, said: "We have some great quality produce available in the region, from Craster kippers to farmhouse cakes. September is the ideal time for people to get out to a farmers' market near them and see what fresh local food is all about."

Some of the produce and crafts they see might not be available anywhere else in the world. For instance, one farmer in Teesdale makes fully functional, miniature dry-stone walls.

"The aim of Fall in Love month is to celebrate the quality and diversity of the fantastic food and produce available in the North-East.

"Farmers' markets are a win-win solution. They provide fresh, safe, natural, nutritious food along with a lively and entertaining shopping experience."
