A NATIONAL sheep sales service has been launched on the internet and telephone.
Sheepfinder.com is open to all pedigree breeders, commercial breeding ewes, store and prime lambs. Buyers and sellers may specify the breed, sex, age, performance records, health status and location of the sheep they wish to buy or sell.
The service is the result of a venture between the British Texel and the British Charollais Sheep Societies and is backed by other breed societies and endorsed by the National Sheep Association and the Meat and Livestock Commission.
The scheme can be contacted on www.Sheepfinder.com or by telephone on 0906 8022233 from 9am-5pm on weekdays.
Mr Jonathan Barber, chief executive of the Charollais society and joint administrator, with Mr Steven McLean, chief executive of the British Texel Sheep Society, of Sheepfinder, said they appreciated that many sheep farmers were either not on the internet or would prefer to speak to someone in person.
"We are also keen to involve our traditional auctioneers," he said. "They have an important role as honest brokers between advertisers wishing to sell and buyers."
