THE first day of autumn term at Yarm school was particularly exciting this week, because, for the first time in its history, girls of all ages were admitted.

On Wednesday morning, 130 girls aged between four and 18 arrived at the independent school, smartly dressed in newly designed uniforms, and were welcomed by the headmaster, Mr David Dunn.

He recalled that girls were admitted into the sixth form in the 1980s and said the response to the change in entrance policy announced last year had been outstanding.

"Yarm school has gained an enviable reputation for excellence in academic and extra-curricular activities. We are all excited about the arrival of the girls and I am sure they will flourish here," he said.

Mr John Logan, senior master, said a considerable amount of planning and preparation had taken place to cater for the new intake of girls in lower years. Buildings had been altered and upgraded, including a new sixth form centre. Pastoral care would take an even higher priority.

New staff appointments include Mrs Naomi Redhead, head of girls PE and games, and Mrs Julie Gresswell, head of first year.

Mr Geoff Hannan, a writer, broadcaster and authority on gender and education, had been brought in to offer additional staff training.
