Cambridge United manager John Beck was an interested spectator when Bishop Auckland lost to Gateshead on Tuesday night.
Beck, who raided the North-East non-league scene when he signed Steve Holmes from Guisborough a decade ago, has been alerted to the good quality of players at both Gateshead and Bishops, and might be considering a swoop.
On several occasions the game reached boiling point on Tuesday night, especially when the referee turned down Bishops' claims for a penalty when Danny Brunskill claimed that he was tripped in the first half.
Gateshead took the lead just after half time when former Darlington striker Robbie Painter scored from six yards out, but Bishops levelled within 60 seconds when Andrew Shaw scored from a left wing cross.
Bishops keeper David Campbell pulled off a superb save from a Steve Preen penalty, but Phil Ross broke away for the winner for Gateshead with ten minutes left.
Spennymoor United have signed striker Wayne Edgcumbe from Durham City, and gave him his debut in their 3-0 defeat at Guiseley on Monday night.
Edgcumbe signed for Durham City only a fortnight ago from Tow Law, but has decided that he wants to play for his home town club.
Moors dropped a couple of places in the table because of that defeat - all of Guiseley's goals came in the second half - but they can make up ground on the leaders when they travel to Leek tomorrow. They have a home game against leaders Ossett Town next Tuesday.
