A HIGH-PROFILE campaign designed to crack down on litterbugs on Metro trains and stations has been launched by operator Nexus.
The campaign, which started with a series of posters across Tyne and Wear, will target a scourge which each year costs an increasing amount of money to combat.
Each year up to 750 tonnes of litter are collected from Metro trains and stations at a cost of tens of thousands of pounds to members of the public.
Metro trains are cleaned each time they arrive at the terminus stations at St James and Newcastle Airport.
Nexus director general Mike Parker said: "Litterbugs are anti-social and litter itself is an eyesore and disliked by our passengers.
"We are confident this campaign will make people think about the consequences of dropping litter."
