PUPILS at Durham High School were the most successful GCSE candidates between the Tyne and Leeds.
This year's Times league table ranked the school 66th in the country.
Thirty-five per cent of GCSE entries were graded A* with 72 per cent at grades A* and A.
Eighty-eight per cent of passes were graded A* to B and almost half the year group gained A* or A grades in all their subjects.
Jessica McCormick, of Esh Winning, and Caroline Swarbrick, of High Shincliffe, had A* grades in all their entries.
Ingrid Frater, from Hartlepool, and Helen Johnson, of Bishop Auckland, were awarded Excellence Awards by the AQA exam board for coming in the best five in the country in music and classical civilisation respectively.
