THE city of Ripon went to town to mark the end of summer at the weekend.
The racecourse hosted the 2001 Ripon Day on Saturday - and so many people turned up, organisers say they are confident the event is now established as a permanent fixture on the calendar.
About 7,000 are thought to have gone through the gates to enjoy events including a re-enactment of the Viking invasion and stunning displays of aquatic agility by the Kawasaki jetski freestyle display team on the lakes.
Entertainment for children included a Punch and Judy show, a circus workshop and magic show, with demonstration of karate and line-dancing in the main arena.
Anyone who did not mind getting a little damp could also try water-skiing, jet skis and sailing, while model boats were available for those who preferred to stay dry.
Spokesman Bernard Bateman said: "A local headteacher told me everyone now knows, on the first weekend after the autumn term, it's time for the Ripon Fun Day - and that is very encouraging.
"We even had as many as 2,000 turn up for the fireworks display in the evening, so I think we can be sure that we will be back next year."
