THE swimming pool at Newton Aycliife's Leisure Centre is to close while the water slide is removed.
Sedgefield Borough Council made the decision to remove the slide when it was discovered that the supports and staircase were deteriorating and it would cost £20,000 to repair.
Although initial estimates to remove the structure were put at less than £5,000, this was increased to £6,120 because health and safety officers insisting scaffolding should be installed around the slide before it is removed.
The work is due to start between Monday, September 17, and Friday, September 21.
It is anticipated that the swimming pool and learner pool will be closed during the work.
The closure is likely to cost the council a further £2,725, but councillors are expected to agree to the payout at a meeting on Thursday.
