West Auckland manager Alan Oliver was happy to pay up after losing a bet following his side's 5-2 home win over Ashington in the first qualifying round of the FA Carlsberg Vase on Saturday.

West won the game 5-2, with Paul Stout amongst the scorers, and Oliver said: "I bet Paul £10 that he wouldn't score more than one goal this season, because he only found the back of the net once last season.

"He scored a couple of weeks ago in the league, and he doubled his score on Saturday.

"I'm happy to pay up, but maybe I should fine him £10 for not scoring enough goals last season!"

West took the lead after 34 minutes when Jonathan Milroy's shot fell for Wayne Nicholson to turn home, and they went further ahead with a Ray Stanger free kick which he curled into the top corner.

Ashington hit back in the second half, Alex Lawson scoring from a right-wing cross, then Stephen Beherall headed in a corner for the equaliser.

But Mark Wheldon made it 3-2 on the hour with a wind-assisted cross, and with eight minutes left Stout made it 4-2 with a header. Dale Anderson finished off the scoring from a John Lydon pass in the closing minutes.

Billingham Synthonia succeeded where Marske United failed in midweek, by winning at Maine Road, by 3-2.

Chris Fawcett headed in from six yards to give Synners the lead, then Lee Flannigan burst through for the second. The home side pulled a goal back, but Flannigan broke away again to make it 3-1.

Washington Nissan had a good 2-1 away win at Cheadle, after trailing 1-0 at half time. Gavin Cobden and Paul Wardle scored their goals in the second half.

Chester-le-Street scored three times in the second half to beat Ramsbottom 4-1.

They trailed to an early goal until just before half time, when Phil Sowerby scored with a header. Chester scored twice in a five-minute spell in the second half, with a Steve Leadbitter shot and an Andy Blower header, then late in the game Neil Maddison volleyed home.

Willington lost 3-2 at home to Parkgate, after four goals were scored in the opening 20 minutes, Dale Snow and Chris Gillespie on target for Willington.

Esh Winning went nap against Hebburn after the sides were level 1-1 at half time. Striker Gary Messer scored four for Esh with Brian Wray also scoring.

Norton, who struggled to raise a team in a midweek game last week, face the same problem again for a replay at Nelson, after the two sides drew 2-2 at Station Road.

Peterlee drew 1-1 at Maltby Main after trailing at half time

Easington went out after losing 2-1 at Selby, Gary Emmerson scoring their goal late in the game. Whickham also went down after a 2-0 defeat at Glasshoughton, while the only Wearside League club, North Shields, lost 3-2 at Winterton.
