THE Darlington branch of the human rights campaign group Amnesty International is celebrating its 25th anniversary this month.
Over the past 25 years, the group has worked on behalf of prisoners of conscience around the world and against injustice and torture.
Members of the Darlington group have helped "adopted prisoners" to regain their freedom and have written letters to heads of state and ministers of countries that have been accused of human rights abuses.
A spokesman for the group said: "Above all, the Darlington group has had the support of the people of Darlington and the surrounding areas.
"Whether on the street signing letters, or in cash or in words, Darlington's population has responded to the cause magnificently."
MEP Stephen Hughes and Mayor of Darlington Councillor Isobel Hartley are supporters of the campaign.
