A WOMAN getting her teeth into a campaign to end exploitation of plantation workers in the Third World, has been giving businesses and residents of one Teesside town food for thought.

Joanne Smithson, of Sadberge, near Darlington won her a £2,000 Millennium Award for her campaign.

She got the backing of cafes, pubs and restaurants in Yarm, at the weekend to promote Fairtrade Ghanaian chocolate and coffee. She said: "When you buy a product like a chocolate bar or a jar of coffee that carries the Fairtrade mark, you know that the farmers or workers that helped to make it were paid a fair price, worked in decent conditions and weren't exploited or mistreated."

Restaurants, including Yarm 85 and the Waiting Room, and pubs including the Ketton Ox and Union Arms joined her campaign.
