WORK has begun on installing the infrastructure of a new business park that could create more than 400 jobs and help to regenerate a North Yorkshire town.

The development agency for Yorkshire, Yorkshire Forward, yesterday got work under way on the installation of the initial infrastructure at the Colburn Business Park, at Catterick Garrison.

The £1.5m work is due to be completed in January next year, and will provide 25 acres of development land. The start of work was signified yesterday by the erection of a site signboard.

The park has been designated for use by e-commerce companies, and Yorkshire Forward is installing broadband communication infrastructure throughout the site.

The park is being developed by Yorkshire Forward in partnership with North Yorkshire County Council, Richmondshire District Council, the Richmond Partnership and the Catterick Campus of Darlington College.

Businesses wanting to establish themselves at the park will need to comply with strict criteria regarding use of the site and the design of their buildings in compliance with the site master plan.

The partners have appointed J N Bentley Ltd of Skipton as main contractor for the project.

Interest has already been shown by a number of businesses, including inquiries from companies in electronics industries involved in research and development, manufacturing, as well as users of high-tech communications. A developer is also being sought for an on-site hotel complex.

Councillor John Blackie, leader of Richmondshire District Council, said: "Colburn Business Park is a crucial part of the overall programme to regenerate the Catterick Garrison area."
