THE funeral of a young mother has been held in the church where her baby daughter was christened just 12 months ago.
Hundreds of mourners packed into St John's Church, Darlington, to pay their final respects to 20-year-old Rachael Littlefair, who was found strangled at her home last month.
A truck full of floral tributes followed the hearse and two pink and white wreaths were placed on the coffin.
The mourners were led by Rachael's parents, Lynn and Donald, and younger sister Kirsty, who have been looking after Rachael's baby, Caitlin, since her death.
At the funeral, the Reverend Judith Howe spoke of Rachael's rebellious teenage years and her love for her extended family and friends.
She said "Rachael was full of life and lived life to the full.
"Motherhood made her. She was a devoted and caring mother and we can be sure that she lives on in Caitlin."
The congregation heard that although Rachael did not enjoy school she gained a civic young achievers award. She did cleaning work at Cummins before her daughter was born, settling down in Lanethorpe Crescent, Darlington.
She was described as a popular girl who loved night-clubbing and was seen as "one of the lads" by her male friends.
The minister read out letters written by Rachael's cousin, Stuart, and sister Kirsty, who held a candle as the commendation was given.
A ceremony at East Cemetery followed the service.
Rachael's boyfriend, Billy Clifton, 18, who lived with her, has been charged with her murder and will appear at Teesside Crown Court in December.
The Northern Echo attended the funeral with the permission of Rachael's family.
