FOR 60 years, visitors and locals alike have been entranced by the annual floodlighting of the most complete remains of a Cistercian abbey in Britain.

The tradition is continuing as once more Fountains Abbey, near Ripon, North Yorkshire, is transformed by music and light.

Every Friday and Saturday night until October 13, visitors can wander among the floodlit ruins listening to Gregorian chant drifting across from Huby's Tower.

"For some, it is a spiritual experience, for others, an opportunity to reflect on what a hive of prayer and industry the abbey must have been in its heyday," said organiser Helen Clarke.
