A PROPOSAL for a bicycle track for youngsters in Newton Aycliffe has been approved by the town council.
But the scheme will only go ahead after full consultation with young people.
The idea for a track at Woodham Park came about after a conversation between Councillor Alan Gray and local youngsters.
Coun Gray said: "I had a discussion with a group of young kids and I asked them what they would like us to do.
"They were all sitting on mountain bikes and they said they would like the council to consider putting in a track so they could ride around and do their various tricks and games."
Coun Gray identified Woodham Park as a possible location, saying: "I'm not talking about an elaborate or expensive thing. Woodham Park has got a naturally hilly area where they could have a bit of a track to try to give them something to practice on."
As a result of his discussion with the youngsters, Coun Gray made the request for a track at a meeting of Great Aycliffe Town Council's recreation committee.
He said: "We have got to consider ideas from young people these days. We often hear the other side of the story about what they get up to, but hopefully, at little cost to the council, we can create something for them well away from houses which should not cause any problems.
"Hopefully we can get something they want. Whether they use it or not we will have to wait and see, but I hope we will do it in consultation with them so they can have an input."
Andrew Bailey, the council's director of leisure and environment, said: "The proposal was approved in principle on the basis that we must talk to the young people to get an idea of what they want to see.
"Then we can consult the neighbouring residents to tell them what we are thinking of doing and get their comments."
Anyone who would like to put forward their views on the proposal can contact Great Aycliffe Town Council at School Aycliffe Lane, Newton Aycliffe, DL5 6QF, or telephone (01325) 300700.
