THE life of one of the most controversial British commanders of the First World War will be explored in a talk next month.
Sir Douglas Haig was Commander-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Force, and his period of command included the most costly battles in British military history.
Author and lecturer John Bourne will give a talk on Saturday, October 6, at the Durham Light Infantry Museum at Aykley Heads, Durham City.
The talk, entitled Haig as Commander-in-Chief will offer a dispassionate appraisal of Haig's career.
Mr Bourne teaches history at the University of Birmingham. His books include The Great War 1914 to 1945 and Who's Who in the First World War.
The talk starts at 2pm. Tickets cost £3.50 adults, £2.50 concessions and £1.50 for season ticket holders.
