Teesside has been put on high alert as a result of the horrific events in America.
Cleveland Police said it had put its Counter Terrorist Strategy into action as soon as it heard what was happening in the States on Tuesday afternoon.
A spokesman said the strategy included increasing police patrols at designated spots in the area and raising awareness among local industries, many of which had already implemented their own security measures.
The state of high alert will remain in place for the foreseeable future.
A spokesman for Enron, which operates the Teesside Power Plant at Wilton, refused to comment on security measures, and a spokesman for Corus added it was not something the company wished to discuss
