DURHAM'S new £20m Tesco Extra supermarket has launched an online shopping service.
The 24-hour store at Dragonville, which opened earlier this month, is offering customers the option of shopping from home through the Internet site www.tesco.com and having their order delivered.
The service, the first to be launched by a major chain, already has one million registered customers nationwide.
The store's home shopping manager Andy Riley said: "This service is a revelation for busy people who don't have time to visit the supermarket, or for those for whom a visit to the store may be difficult.
"Our research shows that more than 50,000 people have Internet access in the area and we expect this to be a very popular service.''
The service is open to people in the DH, DL and SR postcode areas.
The 68,000 sq ft store employs 398 staff, 143 were long-term unemployed who were taken on and trained through a pioneering regeneration scheme run by Tesco.
