MONTHLY farmers' markets are to become a regular fixture in Wear Valley and provide a much-needed income for the district's battered farming industry.
Producers' markets will now take place on the second Friday of every month in Bishop Auckland Market Place, in response to the huge demand from the public.
Teesdale and Wear Valley co-ordinator Cathy Tinn said: "For most people involved in the farmers' markets it is their sole income. A lot of farmers have recognised they need to diversify and can't just carry on selling in the old way and relying on subsidies.
"A lot of them, especially the meat producers, change the way they farm to a non-intensive way of farming to produce goods for the markets.
