A sixth form student has been awarded a trophy for gaining the highest marks in her school during this year's GCSE exams.
Lorena McCabe, 16, received the Lloyd's Bank Trophy, which is presented every year at Hurworth Comprehensive School, near Darlington.
Now a pupil at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College in Darlington, Lorena gained seven A*s and four As in her exams and returned to school to receive the trophy.
Teacher Rita Rees said Lorena deserved her success.
"She is a very hard worker and a very clever and conscientious girl," she said.
"She is a good all-rounder and I'm sure she will do very well in whatever she chooses to do."
Lorena said: "I was genuinely surprised when I received my GCSE results. I was very pleased that the two years of hard work had finally paid off. After the long summer break, I'm now attending Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College, where I'm studying French, biology, chemistry, maths and general studies, all at AS Level.
"I'm not sure what I want to do in the long run, but I would like a science-related job which will allow me to travel.
"I have found that A-levels are a big step up from GCSEs, but the sixth form has been enjoyable so far."
