An ancient structure discovered on the Yorkshire coast is believed to date back to the Vikings.

A timber platform has been found at Cowbar beck, near Staithes, following last winter's floods.

Local archaeologist Colin Mann said: "Staith is a Viking word for a jetty and the timbers are very old but well preserved".

Experts from the North York Moors National Park, the Tees Archaeology Unit, and Sheffield University have been excavating and recording the site.

Graham Lee, the National Park archaeologist, said it was thought the timbers could date back even beyond the Vikings, who founded most of the settlements on the coast, to before the Romans
