PLANS by a far-right political party to hold a demonstration in the North-East came to nothing at the weekend.
The National Front (NF) announced on its website its intention to hold an assembly in Sunderland on Saturday to protest against asylum seekers in the area.
The notice gave no details of time or location and police said the party had not informed them of the gathering.
About 40 people attended a short rally in the city organised by Tyne and Wear Against Racism, but the NF did not show up.
Northumbria Police said the day passed peacefully and there were no arrests.
Last month, the NF was banned by Home Secretary David Blunkett from marching through the city, a ruling that lasts for three months.
Instead, the party was allowed to hold a rally in a small park but NF activists were arrested on their way to the event.
