Thugs broke a man's collarbone in an unprovoked attack at the weekend.
The 20-year-old had been walking along Kingsway, near the centre of Bishop Auckland, County Durham, in the early hours of Saturday morning when he was set upon by the two men.
The attackers are believed to be aged in their late teens or early twenties and were wearing casual clothing.
Any witnesses are asked to contact PC Amanda Long at Bishop Auckland Police station on (01388) 603566.
