VETERANS and cadets commemorating the 61st anniversary of the Battle of Britain yesterday paid tribute to the thousands killed in terrorist attacks in the USA.
In Stockton, cadets and veterans fell silent for a minute before playing the Star Spangled Banner in memory of those killed in the American tragedies.
Cadets from the Air Training Corps (ATC) escorted a parade of air veterans from the Stockton and Thornaby branch of the Royal Air Forces Association to the war memorial in Stockton, where a wreath was laid.
The parade and remembrance service have been held annually for more than 50 years, and commemorate the air battle of 1940 that foiled Nazi Germany plans for an invasion of Britain.
They also commemorate the sacrifice of airmen and women who have lost their lives in RAF campaigns up to the present time.
In Middlesbrough, the Mayor, Councillor Pat Walker, joined service veterans in another parade and service, before laying a wreath at the cenotaph in front of Albert Park.
The Redcar and District veterans assembled at their club in Newcomen Terrace and marched to the war memorial, where Mayor Vilma Collins saluted them.
