DRIVERS have torn down a fence put across a country road to stop the spread of foot-and-mouth disease.
Now, a concrete barrier has been put on the C294 at Dryburn Moor, near Allendale, Northumberland.
The fence was erected to stop sheep that roam the unfenced moorland getting near an infected farm.
It is thought that drivers took the fence down so they did not have to make a detour.
The Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has put up the type of barrier used to protect workmen on motorways.
A spokesman for Defra said: "The person who damaged and removed the fence obviously has no thought whatsoever for the local farming community."
