THE driver of a Vauxhall Cavalier died after a head-on crash with a Mercedes taxi, in Middlesbrough, on Saturday night.
The man, in his mid-30s and from the Middlesbrough area, has not been named. He was thought to have been overtaking another car when he crashed into the taxi on the B1380, at Low Lane, Stainton, three-quarters-of-a-mile west of Strait Lane.
The taxi driver, in his mid-20s, was taken to hospital with leg and arm injuries. His passengers, a husband and wife in their 40s, were also taken to hospital, with head and facial injuries.
Two were taken to the University Hospital of North Tees and another to Middlesbrough General. Their injuries are said to be serious, but not life-threatening.
PC John Morton, who is investigating the crash, said both cars were badly damaged.
He is appealing for witnesses to the accident, which happened just before midnight.
