A COUNTY Durham woman was one of the last people to visit the observation deck of the World Trade Centre. See her pictures on-line and in Wednesday's The Northern Echo.
Mildred Stafford, from Rushyford, near Ferryhill, was one of the last people to enjoy the spectacular view over New York when she visited the landmark building on Monday afternoon.
These are some of the last pictures to be taken from the tower.
The next time she saw the twin towers, they had been struck by terrorist planes and smoke was billowing out of them.
She said: "I was on a coach trip on the way to New Jersey and the first plane must have hit when we were in the Lincoln Tunnel.
"As we came out, the bus driver said: 'If you look over your left shoulder, you will have a spectacular view of the twin towers' and then he realised one of them was on fire.
"We went on a bit further and then he stopped the coach. That was about 9.10am and we saw the second plane hit the tower. We couldn't believe it."
