SO impressed were judges by the artistic talents of pupils at Stanley School of Technology that they had to invent three extra prizes.
The Stanley Action Group Enterprise (Sage) plans to display the overall winning entry across the town.
The residents' group asked youngsters to come up with poster designs to highlight local environmental issues that concern them.
Winners Alex McGee, 12, Tiffany Fantarrow, 13, and Pauline Garthwaite, 13, were awarded £50 for their poster, which highlights the issue of litter. But the girls were more happy that their poster was displayed in the town. "If it does any good that's great," said Alex.
The judges found their task so difficult they invented a second and third prize. Second prize went to Philip Lown and Andrew Charlton and third prize when to Gary Defty.
Councillor Michael Brough presented the prizes on behalf of Sage.
