A DEDICATED leek grower notched up a double success in a local gardening competition.
Not only did Joe Keeler's two blanch leeks, measuring 258 cubic inches, break the Leadgate Workmen's Club record, in Leadgate, near Consett, by more than 20 cubic inches, but he also won the pot leek category.
And that in a year when Mr Keeler also won the neighbouring Blackhill Comrades' Club competition, and finished third in the Easington Open show.
"It's been an excellent year for me. I've been growing for 12 years and it just gets more enjoyable," he said.
Mr Keeler, of Pont Head, near Consett, is secretary of Leadgate Workmen's Club leek section.
