BOLLIN Eric gave trainer Tim Easterby a grand 40th birthday present at Doncaster when landing the mile nursery in good style under Robert Winston - but there may be even bigger presents to come for Sir Neil and Lady Westbrook's homebred Shaamit colt.

Easterby won the same race two years ago with French Fellow, who contested the 2000 Guineas the following season, and Bollin Eric may well follow the same path.

Kevin Ryan said he may run his Doncaster winner Cardinal Venture in the Lincoln after Fergal Lynch made all to land the spoils.

Since her return from France to Sandhutton and to training, Lynda Ramsden has not quite hit the form of former times. But David Brotherton's Astonished, twice a winner at Doncaster before, showed his love of the Town Moor by adding a third under Kieren Fallon.

The jockey was in double form and his ding-dong battle with current champion Kevin Darley continued this week. The current champion was some 13 behind Fallon as we went to press.

Joe Fanning, in a purple patch of form, has booked himself a trip to Switzerland with Mark Johnston's charge, Darasim, another front-running Doncaster winner. Swiss owner Markus Graff 's stayer is expected to contest the Prix du Jockey Club in his home country.

Alas, Johnston's two St Leger runners - And Beyond at Doncaster (Darley, seventh) and Yavana's Pace in the Irish version (Fanning, seventh) - and Bouncing Bowdler, fourth under Fanning in the Curragh's Group 3 Aon MacDonagh Boland Stakes, could not work the oracle on Leger day.

But at Epsom, the Kingsley House trainer sent out another good two-year-old, Stunning Force winning under Darryll Holland for Maktoum Al Maktoum.

Mary Reveley saddled a second winner at the Doncaster meeting when Celtic Romance won under John Carroll in the Battle of Britain Nursery. This was for Bill Brown, whose Reveley-trained Celtic Island won on Wednesday last week.

David 'Dandy' Nicholls took the Epsom opening sprint with a one-two, Al Muallim, again Darryll Holland, beating wife Alex Greaves on stablemate The Tatling. Holland was getting ready for his marriage on Sunday and good wishes go to him and his bride.

As we remarked last week, Johnston rarely visits Goodwood without a winner and another good two-year-old succeeded on Wednesday as Darley partnered the useful Simeon to take the mile maiden.

Meanwhile, with Yarmouth abandoned, Fallon sped north to Beverley and landed a double, one for his old boss Jimmy FitzGerald. Jamie Spencer also took a double, David Barron providing one leg.

News from the Helmsley area this week, where the excellent sum of £3,500 was raised for the Injured Jockeys Fund and Racing Welfare at the Feversham Arms on Sunday.

Boots Wilkinson - whose racing friends will remember his days in Middleham and who now lives in Ampleforth - and landlord Tony Fawcett thank all those involved with the event.

Racehorse owner Richard Whiteley, television's Countdown presenter, was the celebrity guest. Former trainer Jack Berry, present trainer Dandy Nicholls and Boots himself conducted the auction and the event was attended by owners, trainers and racing connections from a wide area.

On the jumps front, Norman Mason had a first winner this season with Night Fighter at Worcester, but fared rather worse at Bangor when he was referred to the Jockey Club for "training in public" with three runners in one race, Rakaposhi Raid, Red Mimosa and Sabi Sand.

Assistant Richard Guest said events had conspired against the team. All three were born and bred in the same field and had never been away from the farm before. They did not want to go away from each other in the race.

Sedgefield had a good day on Tuesday with Edwin Tuer, Denys Smith, Andy Crook and Malcolm Jefferson all winning, plus the normal success by Mary Reveley.
