SAMARITANS in Durham are on the look-out for volunteers to help with their work.
The Mid Durham branch of the listening organisation has increased the range of activities from its core telephone service to working with youngsters, disabled people, prisoners and answering e-mails.
Its workload has increased by about 20 per cent in recent years and it is looking at new ways to help people.
The branch is holding an introductory session tomorrow when people can find out more about what is involved in being a volunteer.
A branch spokesman said: "We could do with another eight to ten people. That would be lovely.
"This year we have probably recruited about 30 volunteers, but that is not entirely a net gain as we have lost some people because they have moved or had a change in lifestyle.
"We have so many activities. Manning the phones is the most important, but we also do work with children, disabled, and in local prisons."
The session will be held at the branch's headquarters at 26 Sutton Street, in Durham, starting at 2pm.
People who sign up to help will be given training. For details call 0191-384 2727.
