ROBERT LEE is far from comfortable with the "New Entertainers'' tag Newcastle have picked up following their goal-happy start to the season.

Lee, a member of the Kevin Keegan team which had the football world spellbound in the mid-90s, can see similarities with Bobby Robson's side.

Newcastle have scored four in a game four times this term, the latest such haul coming in the 4-3 victory over champions Manchester United last weekend.

The talk on Tyneside is that the Keegan days are returning, but veteran midfielder Lee warned yesterday: "As far as I'm concerned, it's just a big banana skin waiting to happen."

Lee, 35, travels to face boyhood heroes West Ham tomorrow knowing that the Magpies, three points behind leaders Bolton with two games in hand, could hardly be better placed to end their London jinx.

Newcastle hit four against Troyes in the Intertoto Cup, and against Middlesbrough, Brentford and Manchester United in an astonishing spell which also saw the Hammers slump to the foot of the Premiership table.

But Lee was quick to urge caution, saying: "I knew the big hype was coming after we beat Manchester United.

"But I'd be happier if we just went along softly, softly picking up points and climbing the table.

"It's refreshing, but dangerous, to be labelled the entertainers again. It's similar to the Keegan era in that we are scoring lots of goals - and letting them in as well!

"We are still leaking too many and most of the goals we concede are the result of individual errors. We are doing well at the moment, but we mustn't stop working hard and we need to concentrate for 90 minutes."

Former England international Lee is delighted to be part of a team that can put a smile back on the face of the game.

He said: "Fans want to see goals and exciting players, and we have players like Laurent Robert, Kieron Dyer and Alan Shearer who get bums off seats."

Much of the credit for Newcastle's bright new look has gone to £10m French winger Robert, but Lee reckons that his close friend Shearer is the man who has been the catalyst since returning from the knee injury that threatened his career.

Lee said: "There was never any doubt in my mind that he was going to come back. He has always bounced back from horrific injuries. That's the sort of character he is, and just to have him fit and around the players has given everybody a confidence lift.

"With him in the team you know that even if you haven't played well for 80 minutes and he gets a single chance, he'll score. That can hide a thousand cracks. It's great to have him back."
